Immigrant + Bi/Multi-Cultural Experience
Are you a 1st generation immigrant,
2nd generation child of immigrants,
or consider yourself somewhere in between due to the role you played in supporting your family while also growing up?
Immigrant experience can be stressful. It’s a lot to manage/navigate government systems, deal with the stresses of establishing a new home, new friends, new support systems all while enduring the high stakes pressure to make the journey worth it. It can have very specific economic pressures which can be tough to endure alone. Immigrant experience can also be confusing, isolating and can impact the self-esteem, confidence that you know you have inside you. It can make you wonder where you belong, and question your sense of home and identity. Assimilation can be complicated, leaving you wondering “do I really fit in and how do I regain what I (or my family) lost while trying to fit in?”
And if you have experienced forced migration/displacement, this can add another layer of unresolved grief, disconnection, frustration or anger. If your family experienced this, you could be experiencing the impacts of this trauma (this is called intergenerational trauma). Exploring your family story in a safe manner can help bring healing.
Therapy can be that safe space for you.
In therapy, we can work together to help you process your personal immigrant experience, and all other aspects of being human, so that you can regain your sense of belonging, confidence and self esteem and live your most fulfilling life.
